As we approach the 2023 general election in Nigeria, it is common knowledge that the number of registered political parties has reduced to 18, down from 91 in 2019. After much contention in the parties’ primaries, the candidates who emerged victorious have been announced. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is constitutionally mandated to organize elections for political offices in Nigeria. INEC’s duties are outlined in Section 15, Part 1 of the Third Schedule to the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 2 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).
